Kenya Partnership

Y2K - Youth to Kenya

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.  Romans 12:1

Y2K is an acronym that stands for Youth to Kenya.  It is an intergenerational mission group of 15 people (adult & youth) at Faith Presbyterian Church who have a desire to visit our partner church in Nyeri, Kenya during the summer of 2010 for the following purposes:

  • To continue a face to face partnership with our friends in Nyeri, Kenya.
  • To assess the needs of the Children’s ministry and communicate back to Faith Church.
  • To continue growing in our Faith while participating with all the other Presbyterian Churches within the Riamukurwe Parish.

It’s hard to imagine that this trip started as a question posed to G.L.U.E. at a backyard picnic in August of 2008.  Since that time, we have been working closely with the Mission and Christian Education committees to seek ways to make this trip a reality.  We have been on a rollercoaster ride with lots of ups, downs and surprises trying to figure out how to finance and organize such a trip.

The following people have made a commitment to this mission trip: Jack, Jacqueline, Lisa and Marissa Decker; John Gill; Andrew, Diane, Grady and Jim Millick; Lauren and Laurie Payea-Murray; Rachel and Steve Shussett; Darcy and Karen Trop.

The group has committed to raising half of the $45,000 projected for the trip through fundraising.  And, the group meets monthly to focus on scripture, understanding partnership, group dynamics, travel concerns and devotionals.

Fundraising efforts have been approved by Session and have been actively happening outside Faith Church since the spring of 2009 to include:

  • Swim-in-Zone swim party
  • Edge of the Woods Concession – we tried a new item, “Taco in a Bag”
  • June Yard Sale
  • Emmaus Celebration Concession stand
  • Wheels of Time Concession stand
  • Schaefer/McDonald wedding reception
  • September Yard sale
  • Mr. Bill’s Chicken Concession stands
  • Service projects
  • A Mission Letter to others outside Faith Church to witness our faith and ask for support

God is working in us and through us throughout this process as we witness our faith outside of Faith Presbyterian Church.  God continues to bless us and challenge us through these efforts.  We have reached our financial goal for the trip and continue to raise funds for the children's ministry at the Riamukurwe Parish in Nyeri, Kenya.

Support can still be made in a number of ways.  First and foremost, you can hold us up in prayer.  You could become a prayer partner of one of the above members of the Y2K team or pray for the group as a whole.  If you are lead to help the group financially, you can make a check out to Faith Presbyterian Church with “Youth 2 Kenya” in the memo line.  All contributions go to support the Mission team and the children’s ministry in Nyeri, Kenya.
